ON SET WITH FRANK BODY | LAUNCHING A-BEAUTY
BY MARIA THATTIL
I recently shot the newest campaign for Frank Body’s A-Beauty Scrub. On the day of the shoot, I frolicked on the beach, exfoliated on cam with the new scrub & had a laugh with the other beautiful, vivacious women featured in the campaign.
The A-Beauty Campaign was about celebrating Aussie Beauty. The product itself is Aussie made, eco-friendly, cruelty-free, naturally sourced and paraben/pegs-free. What an honour to be aligned with a launch so full of goodness. But beyond that - the campaign was close to my heart for another reason.
Standing at 5”4, with a size 4 waist, size 8 bum and deep dark skin - I used to think I could never fit the standard criteria for a ‘model’. Modelling was seemingly out of my reach because I thought that my skin, curves & height didn’t fit the ‘model’ mould.
But over the past few years, I’ve been committed to challenging any kind of negative, self-limiting beliefs I have held. Because those beliefs have been the result of conditioning that is exclusive, damaging and most importantly, untrue.
Beauty to me is no longer an ideal and I’ve realised that feeling beautiful is more of a mental and emotional journey than it is a physical one. In my country, Australia, we are made of many faces and multiculturalism underpins who we are. That’s why I believe Australian Beauty has no mould - it is diversity of shape, colour and size. It is the natural confidence that comes with embracing the freedom you have to be who you are. And I was so honoured to do this shoot, because if you look at this image, you will see that Frank Body’s idea of beauty is just that.
These days, we are starting to see it a little more in the industry, but I feel we have a way to go. I strongly believe we need to be not just acknowledging, but celebrating people of all colours, body shapes and sizes and the different stories that they have to tell. Because I promise you - the beauty lies in our differences.
